So, I definitely just devoured this book in one sitting and I am totally obsessed (as I so often am) with it. I initially started reading it because of the coming film with Emma Watson and that guy from Percy Jackson (Lerman- something?). Oh and Mae Whitman, who I have loved since seeing her in Scoot Pilgrim.

So I bought it and at first I was pissed cause it only contained 137 pages, but whoa did it pack a hell of a punch for such a lightweight book (I assume it is so as I read on my Nook lol). Chbosky (I love his last name) does more in these 100+ pages than most authors do in 400; I could not put it down! I’m not going to put a whole synopsis on what it was about because you can go to google for all that, but I want to talk about how it made me feel.
I was almost disgusted at how much Charlie (the M.C.) resembled me in high school: the awkwardness, the just being there and not actually BEING there, the daily drama I had with my certain group of friends. However, I never got all A’s like our narrator in fact I hardly had any A’s at all in high school. Anyway, I can relate to him and that’s what makes a reader fall in love with a story right? Or at least it helps? But, I felt for his character even when I wanted to bash his head open for all the crying he did (he’s so emo it hurts sometimes). But, what really resonated with me is the revelation that comes at the end of the novel. It practically smack you in the face with how heavy it is and it just makes all of the past events significant.
Now I said how I loved how I could relate to Charlie, but I also loved the format/style it was written in. His anon letters to this mystery “friend” that he doesn’t even personally know and vice versa, really adds another layer (of what I don’t know) to this story. I’m constantly trying to figure out who the hell this person and it’s frustrating that he doesn’t reveal who they are (I will find out somehow!).
Anyways, cutting it short, Chbosky’s characters are just awesome, I fell in love with Patrick (I have a thing for gay guys) and Sam (I kept picturing her as Emma Watson) and the whole motley crew (or is it crue?). But what I came on here to share was one of the poems that Stephen Chbosky (that’s to show you I do know his name) actually wrote out in the novel. It is by Osoanon Nimuss (his name makes me chuckle) and is entitled “Absolutely Nothing”. It’s so morbid and I just love shit like that, so if you don’t read the book for anything else, at least read it for this poem:
Once on a yellow piece of paper with green lines
he wrote a poem
And he called it ‘Chops’
because that was the name of his dog
And that’s what it was all about
And his teacher gave him an A
and a gold star
And his mother hung it on the kitchen door
and read it to his aunts
That was the year Father Tracy
took all the kids to the zoo
And he let them sing on the bus
And his little sister was born
with tiny toenails and no hair
And his mother and father kissed alot
And the girl around the corner sent him a
Valentine signed with a row of X’s
and he had to ask his father what the X’s meant
And his father always tucked him in bed at night
And was always there to do it.
Once on a piece of white paper with blue lines
he wrote a poem
And he called it ‘Autumn’
because that was the name of the season
And that’s what it was all about
And his teacher gave him an A
and asked him to write more clearly
And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door
because of its new paint
And the kids told him
that Father Tracy smoked cigars
And left butts on the pews
And sometimes they would burn holes
That was the year his sister got glasses
with thick lenses and black frames
And the girl around the corner laughed
when he asked her to go see Santa Claus
And the kids told him why
his mother and father kissed alot
And his father never tucked him in bed at night
And his father got mad
when he cried for him to do it.
Once on a paper torn from his notebook
he wrote a poem
And he called it ‘Innocence: A Question’
because that was the question about his girl
And that’s what it was all about
And his professor gave him an A
and a strange steady look
And his mother never hung it on the kitchen door
because he never showed her
That was the year Father Tracy died
And he forgot how the end
of the Apostle’s Creed went
And he caught his sister
making out on the back porch
And his mother and father never kissed
or even talked
And the girl around the corner
wore too much makeup
That made him cough when he kissed her
but he kissed her anyway
because that was the thing to do
And at 3am he tucked himself into bed
his father snoring soundly.
That’s why on the back of a brown paper bag
he tried another poem
And he called it ‘Absolutely Nothing’
Because that’s what it was really all about
And he gave himself an A
and a slash on each damned wrist
And he hung it on the bathroom door
because this time he didn’t think
he could reach the kitchen.

Free Writing Prompt - Use the following phrase as a focal point to write from: “The stain will not come out…”
Hurried footsteps paced across the linoleum floor, always ending at the same exact spot. Her hand combed through her harried hair, a feeble attempt to smooth it down in place.
One more trip across the floor. Stop. She picks up her pack of cigarettes and lights one. A couple of puffs. A glance out the kitchen window before she opened it to let the smell out. A couple of sprays of fragrance before resuming her post.
Last trip across the floor. She picked up the crisp white sheet and stared at the offending mark. It won’t come out! The stain will not come out! The cigarette got too close to the sheet, a burn mark joined the big red stain. How on Earth to get out of this predicament she got herself into.
It was only a momentary lapse in judgement as a result of the briefest, most minute thought that she deserved some freedom. ‘Well, look where freedom gets you,’ she taunted herself. Only half an hour until her family would be home, an hour and she’ll probably be locked up in some loony bin.
It wasn’t supposed to get this complicated. She thought maybe to try running it under the cold water again, but frustration was the only result as the stain didn’t lessen one bit. Detergent, even bleach would not help her.
The smell seemed to get stronger, or was that just mind tricks? It grew pungent and solid in the air, not even the window giving it a break.

So, after editing the hell out of my tumblr layout, I googled “Unique Writing Prompts” (nothing good came up), but I did come across the website above. It also contained Journaling, Poems, Prose, and Opinion Writing Prompts.
This reminded me of my To be defined post on the word esoteric…
